Answer #1

He used a really good example of kicking a rock down a road versus kicking a mouse down a road. When you kick a rock down a road you do not have to consider its emotions or feelings because it is a rock, therefore not a living creature. However, when you kick a mouse down a road, you must consider how it will feel because it would suffer the pain of being kicked unlike a rock. The same goes with every living being. You must consider how they will feel when inflicting anything that might make them suffer, like tests for products.

Why does Rachels claim that Utilitarianism was a "revolution in ethics? Because Mill and Bentham, founders of Utilitarianism, were atheists. Because, according to the main normative principle of Utilitarianism (the “Principle of Utility'), ethics is no longer grounded in religion. Because the founders of Utilitarianism worked closely to two great intellectual innovators of the 19th century: Marx and Darwin.
