Answer #1

The given data

Infusion rate = 22 mL / hr

Concentration of heparin = 50 unit / mL

Concentration of heparin in 5% dextrose solution infused to the patient = 5000 unit / 100 mL

= 5000/100 = 50 unit / mL

The formula for dose calculation is

Desired dose x Volume of dose in hand = Amount to be given

Dose in hand

Here desired dose is not given, so let it be" X" units

Dose in hand is 50 units

Volume of dose in hand is 1 mL and the amount to be given in one hour is 22 mL.

X units / 50 units x 1 mL = 22 mL / hr

X / 50 = 22 / 1

X = 50 x 22 = 1,100 unit / hr

This means 22 mL solution contains 1,100 Units which is administered in one hour. So, the dose of heparin administered in 6 hours can be calculated by

1,100 units x 6 hrs = 6,600 units

Thus the answer is 6,600 units.
