The Apgar (pronounced ap-gär) score was developed in the 1950s by Dr. Virginia Apgar as a way to assess newborns quickly and detect the need for intervention to help establish breathing. The Apgar score is recorded at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. In some cases, the infant also is assessed at 10 minutes of age.

The Apgar score is just a single pointer of infant wellbeing and this appraisal alone isn't utilized to foresee long haul soundness of the newborn child. In spite of the fact that it has various restrictions (e.g., sound preterm babies may get a low score because of adolescence), the Apgar score can be utilized to recognize diminished breath and assess the infant's reaction to revival endeavors.

A 5-minute Apgar score of 0– 3 is viewed as low and may show a neurological condition (e.g., cerebral paralysis). In infants with a 5-minute score of under seven, the assessment ought to be rehashed at 5-minute interims for up to 20 minutes after birth.
