Hypocalcemia is a condition in which serum calcium lavel is less than 8.8 mg/dL or serum ionized calcium less than 4.7 mg/dL

Treatment options for hypocalcemia includes

  1. Oral calcium supplementation-( for mild cases and asymptomatic patients )recommended dose of 1-3g/day
  2. IV calcium supplementation in case severe hypocalcemia with symptoms of tetany or cardiac arrhythmias.

100-300 mg of elemental calcium can be given. IV calcium is available in two formulations. Calcium gluconate and calcium chloride. 10 ml preparations are available and to be given over 10 mins.

Treatment of chronic hypocalcemia might require vitamin D or calcitriol supplementation along with recombinant human parathyroid hormone. This is to be initiated after proper evaluation by an endocrinologist.
