In room 904 is T.M., a 10-month-old child admitted to the pediatric nursing unit for a new-onset seizure that occurred at home. He is admitted with the diagnosis of rule out bacterial meningitis. The lumbar puncture confirms Hemophilus influenzae meningitis. There is a positive Brudsinski sign. T.M.’s has not received any immunizations as his parents do not believe in immunizations.

Item 2.            T.M.’s condition has worsened and hydrocephalus has developed. His mother says her neighbor said that means her son has developed “water on the brain.” How would you explain hydrocephalus to T.M.’s mother?   What treatments are available for hydrocephalus? What are the main complications related to V-P shunts?

I would explain to T.M.'s mother by saying that hydrocephalus is the build up of cerebrospinal​ fulid inside the brain.The cerebrospinal fluid is the saltwater that is produced inside the ventricles which acts as a cushion around the spinal cords nd brain.The main function of this CSF is it provides nutrients and takes away the waste from brain and spinal cord but when there blockage occurs in the CSF flow or the CFS is not absorbed into the blood stream which result in the excess fluid in the brain and pressure increases because of it.

2)Treatment include.

VP stunt surgery.(Ventriculoperitonial stunt surgery).

ETV surgery ( End third ventriculostomy surgery).

Complications of VP stunt.

Infection,improper drainage,stunt malfunction.
