Answer #1
  • Equipment chosen: Hemocue.
  • Performing control checks: It has a self-test mode to check cartridges, which is verified by liquid controls.
  • Performing the test and explain what this test checks for and why: First insert the cartridge into the cartridge compartment. Gently mix the reagent pack five to six times and apply it to the specimen. Fill the tip of the sampling area with the sample. Insert the reagent pack and wait for five minutes. Then wait for possible bubbles to disappear. Hemocue is a point-of-care fully automated equipment used to test HbA1c, which is a glycated form of hemoglobin. This test is done as it shows a patient's average blood sugar for three months.
  • Required maintenance: Maintenance includes cleaning of Hemocue 501 exterior and cartridge compartment, and air filter replacement.

    A) Cleaning the exterior:

    1) First, disconnect the Hemocue.

    2) Wipe the exterior with a clean cloth; do not use cleaners. Use an alcohol swab if needed for the dirt removal.

    B) Cartridge compartment cleaning:

    1) Disconnect the Hemocue.

    2) After opening the lid, rotate the cartridge compartment by pressing the 2 black knobs.

    3) A sponge moistened with ethanol or any recommended disinfectants such as CaviCide should be used to wipe off the cartridge compartment. Avoid dripping any liquids inside.

    C) Fan filter replacement: The fan filters located on the back should be regularly checked and replaced if clogged by dust particles. Extra filters are usually given with the analyzer or can be bought from the local distributor.

    1) Remove the cover of the fan filter.

    2) Remove the used fan filter and replace it with a new one if needed.

    3) Cover the fan filter.

  • Expected test values (normal-abnormal) range: Normal range is 7-20 g/dL.
