Case study: Ms. W, a 21-year-old woman, came into a clinic after suffering a deep laceration on her foot while walking barefoot around her yard. The wound was cleaned, sutured, and bandaged, and she was released to return home after receiving tetanus antitoxoid. Within 72 hours, the wound area was red and swollen, the suture line was dark in color, and it was accompanied by severe throbbing pain. Ms. W had a high fever, her heart felt like it was racing, and she was finding it hard to concentrate even on simple tasks. She returned to the clinic and was immediately taken to the hospital. Following lab tests, a diagnosis of acute necrotizing fasciitis was made. Discussion Questions 1. Explain why Ms. W. received a tetanus antitoxoid before leaving the hospital. 1. A laceration is a cut through the skin.Tetanus bacteria are commonly present in soil, dust, and manure. The tetanus bacteria can infect a person even through a tiny scratch.

To prevent from the disease tetanus, Ms . W got a shot of tetanus toxoid before leaving the hospital.

2.Necrotizing fasciitis - A serious bacterial infection that destroys tissue under the skin.

To get necrotizing fasciitis, you need to have the bacteria in your body. Ms. W was barefooted and got a cut through her skin due to this the bacteria can enter and Ms. W can be infected from necrotising fasciitis..

Pathophysiology:-

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly spreading infection of the subcutaneous tissue that results in extensive destruction of the fat and fascia. In the early stages of infection, skin and muscle are spared, but if allowed to progress, the organism affects deeper tissues and systemically progresses to septic shock.

3. If the antibiotic drugs do not reduce the infection quickly, then-

Pain will increase and there may be more swelling.

The pus can be developed.

If the infection spreads the condition of Ms. W get worsen and she may develop necrotising fasciitis.
