  1. Will, a 14 year-old boy develops a bad case of otitis media (middle ear infection) a few days in both ears after swimming in the Murray River, north of Melbourne.

Will's previous medical history is unremarkable except for having had a minor skin rash two years ago after being treated with amoxicillin for a sore throat.

The Therapeutic Guidelines recommend

amoxicillin 15 mg/kg up to 500 mg orally, 8-hourly for 5 days.

Will’s mother asks you, the practice nurse, whether it’s safe for Will to use the amoxicillin. What do you say and why?

Answer #1

Taking antibiotics within the therapeutic guidelines is safe. The previous history clearly shows the patient had allergic to amoxicillin antibiotic. So as a nurse should inform physician and get other non penicillin antibiotic.Inform the patient mother not to take amoxicillin. It is not safe and give other alternative antibiotic under physician advice.
