IONIZING RADIATION

Ionizing radiation is radiation travelling as a particle or electromagnetic wave that carries sufficient energy to detach electrons from atoms or molecules thereby ionizing them.ionizing radiation is measured in electron volts.1 electron volt is an extremely small amount of energy .commonly used multiple units are kilo electron and mega electron volt .

Examples includes

  • gamma rays,
  • higher ultra violet rays
  • ,alpha rays
  • .beta rays.

RISK:

Acute health effects such as skin burns or acute radiation syndrome can occur when doses of radiation exceeds certain levels.Low doses of ionizing radiation can increase the risk of long term effects such as cancer

Ionizing radiation has many beneficial applications including uses in

  • industry,
  • agriculture,and
  • research.

As the use of ionizing radiation increases so does the potential for health hazards if not properly used or contained.industrial medical and military uses are there for this type of radiation.

NON IONIZING RADIATION:

It refers to any type of electromagnetic radiation that does not carry enough energy per quantum to ionize atoms or molecules that is to completely remove an electron from an atom or molecule

Non ionizing radiation is relatively low energy radiation that doesn't have enough energy to ionize atoms or molecules. although considered less dangerous than ionizing radiation over exposure to non ionizing radiation can cause health issues.It doesn't penetrate deep into the tissues but increases the risk of damage to skin and eyes.depending on the energy and exposure time this radiation can cause localized heating or photo chemical reactions can occur with possible permanent harm.It can also cause genetic damage.can cause damage to
