A colleague is working with a child with autism spectrum disorder and this child becomes highly stressed when placed in situations where they are forced to socialise with other children. A professional has recommended that the child be slowly taught socialisation skills and given an opportunity to practice them with one person they trust. The colleague tells you that they think the child will learn to socialise better if they are ‘thrown in the deep end and involved in as many group activities as possible.’What might happen if the colleague does not implement the strategies suggested by the professional? Young children with autism prefers to be by themselves. As the professional says to get child to be socialised and if it is not implemented then it will be difficult for the child to devolop social skill needed to interact successfully with others. Devoloping social skill in early childhood is that much important. Bullying in middle and high school and as he grow and have a job then, not to mention at work place are some problem people with autism shows. Devolopment of friendship is one of the way to prevent this.

Without a personal friendship they cannot share their interests, feelings and thoughts with others. Without socialism the child may struggle with verbal communication. Miscommunication can make harder to make and keep friends. Unlike a normal person autism neurology mean that their brain cannot automatically pick up and effectively use all the social information around us. Getting the child socialised in early childhood is the best solution a supporter can give.
