When I first saw the film Patch Adams years ago, I thought it was fiction and I saw this doctor as immature and silly. I later discovered that Patch Adams is a real doctor! In fact, the actual Gesundheit Institute followed much of this model, and it was in operation for twelve years and has plans for future development. Yes, Patch Adams model of health care is an effective and feasible model. Patch Adams portrays a doctor who uses humor as an effective tool for treatment. Though the documentary projects him merely as a funny doctor for financial viability, his method of treatment was used quite successfully for years. Adams believes in holistic care and his methodology revolves around humor and play which he considers to be imperative to physical and emotional health.
