STRENGTHS:
a) MRI is particularly used for the scanning and detection for abnormalities in the soft tissue structures ( cartilage tissues) and soft organs (brain or heart) in the body.
b) It is non-invasive, painless and does not involve any radiations. Also safe for those who are vulnerable to the effects of radiation ( pregnant mothers, babies )
c) It can provide information about blood circulation and blood vessels and detect problems related to the blood circulation within the body.
d) MRI can easily create hundreds of images from almost any direction and in any orientation.
e) It can cover large portions of the body other than ultrasound and mammography ( covers only small parts of the body)
f) It can determine if a cancer has spread, and help to determine the best treatment possible.
WEAKNESS:
a) Some people who are claustrophobic ( fear of enclosed space) face problems with conducting MRI
b) It provides really loud noise and also requires high amount to electric current to perform a scan
c) It is expensive.
d) if a patient chooses to be sedated for the procedure, there is a slight risk associated with using the sedation medication
e) A small chance of getting an allergic reaction because of the contrasting agent or skin infection develop at the injection site.
f) An undetected metal implant in a patient's body may be affected by the strong magnet used in the MRI unit.
SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE:
Ofcourse yes. As an advantage it can be able to identify the spread of cancer diseases and helps in planning appropriate treatment for the patient. But every cancer like breast cancer indicated by microcalcifications are not be able to detect through MRI. Although MRI is not recommended as a substitute to mammography , but scientific research (2004) shows with an evidence that in women with an inherited susceptibility to cancer, MRI studies are more sensitive than mammography in detecting tumors. Based on the study it has proved that MRI has a greater impact on the safety and effectiveness in promoting health and wellness.
