A cattle drive originates in Oklahoma City in April, 1875 and moves
through Arkansas to Memphis, TN, arriving in August and is
associated with the following events:
• The men on the drive note that “Cookie”, the cook
for the drive is “out-of-sorts”. For about the first week of the
cattle drive he appears to be having bowel problems. Within 24 to
48 hours over half the men on the drive begin to experience bloody
diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that last for about a week.
Before the drive is over just about everyone on the drive has
displayed similar symptoms.

Shigella .
The shigella bacteria attach to the lining of the intestines .They trick host cells,they lyse the phagosome ,multiply rapidly and kill the host cell,they lyse the phagosome ,multiply rapidly and kill the host cell.They produce toxins that increase secretion of water and cause cell death .
In this situation faecal shedding of cattle is the major source of infection. This caused infection to the cook and from hiim person to person transmission occured due to improper food handling and poor hygienic practices.As people with shigellosis are not allowed to prepare food for others until they have proven that they are no longer infected.
Transmission can occur by faecal -oral route,person -to-person transmission,consumption of contaminated food or water.Strictly human pathogen.Causes dysentry,one of the most common causes of diarrhea world wide.Shiga toxin contributes to the overall severity of illness inflammatory colitis and bloody diarrhea.
