The Social Services department plays an important role in transitioning individuals discharged from hospitals into short-term rehabilitation units in nursing homes. What are the Federal requirements for social services staffing in Medicare/Medicaid certified nursing homes, and do all social services staff have to be licensed social workers?

Nursing homes having more than 120 beds need to employ a full time social worker. He/she should be having bachelors degree in social work. It does not insist to have licensed social workers.

Discharge planning- This ensures that the patient gets the ongoing health care maintenance even after being discharged from hospital.

Nursing home social worker is responsible to formulate the policies and routines that will help the residents to enjoy maximum individuality, independence and dignity

A social worker must perform within a social service agency.

Assisted living communities must have a licensed social worker present for their residents. They have to perform a number of functions like helping them to adjust to life in new residences, providing counselling and psychosocial assessments etc..social work values and skills are much needed now a days in assisted living communities.
