PCSK9 is a gene that provides instructions for regulating cholesterol in the body. New drugs have been made to target PSCK9. What is the purpose of these medications and how do they affect cholesterol metabolism? Under what circumstances would this drug be beneficial?

PCSK9 gene encodes for Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9). PCSK9 takes part in regulation of cholesterol homeostasis.

In normol condition LDL binds to LDLR which causes the LDL metabolism. PCSK9 acts by reducing LDLR levels on plasma membrane. This results in decreased metabolism of LDL which could result in  hypercholesterolemia.

Drugs have been made to target PCSK9. PCSK9 inhibitors help in lowering levels of LDL, treating hypercholesterolemia and preventing cardiovascular disease.

These drugs are beneficial in cases where maximal tolerated statins fail to achieve the control over LDL and treat hypercholesterolemia
