Fungal infection of skin causing pigmentary changes and scaling of the skin is seen in Tinea versicolor. In this type of infection fungi produce enzymes that inhibit melanin production . The lesions are asymptomatic and appear as patches with fine scales.
The causative organism is the yeast Pityrosporium orbiculare. Microscopic examination of slides with potassium hydroxide shows combination of fungal yeast and hyphae forms in a " spaghetti and meatball appearance with superficial layers of the epidermis.
