Answer #1

It is important to use a discard tube when collecting blood specimens, especially for anticoagulant studies. The winged infusion set have some air within the tube which alters the ratio of blood components. So a small amount of blood has to be drawn in the discard tube first which can be thrown away. Also, vacuum pressure in the winged infusion tube is lesser compared to the evacuated tube which leads to the collapse of a small vein. So the use of the discard tube will resolve these problems.
