Answer #1

The term emergency usually refers to any extraordinary event that requires a rapid and skilled response and that can be managed by a community's existing resources. Most patients with life-threatening or potentially life-threatening problems arrive at the hospital through the emergency department. Many more patients report to the ED for less urgent conditions.Over 80 million people visit EDs annually and this number is increasing for a variety of reasons. These factors have resulted in chronic overcrowding and long wait times in the Emergency department(ED).

When an emergency occurs first responders are dispatched to the scene .Triage of casualities of an emergency must be rapid and conducted in less than 15 seconds. In general ,two thirds of casualities will be tagged green or yellow and the remaining will be tagged red or black. Casualities need to be treated and stabilized and if there is known or suspected contamination, decontaminated at the scene. After this, they are transported to hospitals. Many other casualities will arrive at hospitals on their own.The total number of casualities a hospital can expect is estimated by doubling the number of casualities that arrive in the first hour.Generally 30% of casualities will require admission to the hospital and one half of these will need surgery within 8 hours.

Emergency nurses care for patients of all ages and with a variety of problems .However some EDs specialize in certain patient populations or conditions, such as pediatric ED or trauma ED.The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)is the speciality nursing organization aimed at advancing emergency nursing practice. The ENA provides standards of care for nurses working in the ED ,as well as a certification process that allows nurses to become a certified emergency nurse. All health care providers have a role in emergency preparedness.Knowledge of the hospitals emergency response plan is necessary, including individual roles and responsibilities of the members of the response team and participation in emergency.Several types of drills are used to assess a hospitals level of emergency preparedness. These drills can include hospital disaster drills, computer simulations and table top excercises. it has been shown that these drills allow health providers to become familiar with the emergency response procedures.

All disasters result in psychologic stress to the individuals involved immediately after the event. This stress can persist for an extended period of time and is influenced in part by the nature of the event, the individuals age ,preexisting coping mechanisms, role in the ev.ent, the individuals age and medical and psychologic history. Many hospitals and DMATs have a critical incident stress management unit This unit arranges group discussions to allow participants to verbalize and validate their feelings and emotions about the experience and is important for emotional recovery.
