Pheromones are chemical substances secreted by living organisms and used for communication. These are released outside into the surroundings and can be perceived by other organisms through sense of smell. These are helpful in intra specific communication ( works in animals of same species). It produces a psychological and physiological changes in the organism that senses it.

It plays a very important role in lower animals like insects, earth worms, rats, dogs etc. They use these for mating, communication and marking their territory etc.

Example : bombykol is secreted by moths. It helps female to attract male.
