The patient has changed his eating habits over the past 6 months. He started to control the amount of calories he consumed and kept it below 3000 kcal/day. He got a membership at the local gym, but due to his busy schedule he wasn’t been able to spend much time working out and expresses that he “maybe goes once a week”. Four weeks ago he started a “fad diet” to help him lose more weight. He is 26 years old now, his blood pressure is 125/76, he weighs 200lb, he is 5'9" and his waist circumference is 40in. He recorded what he ate during the last 2 weeks and these are the results: 2700 kcal/day (total daily intake), 1000 kcal from lipids, 1200 kcal from protein and 500 kcal from carbohydrates.

List 2 positive things about his current diet and explain how you came to that conclusion. Provide quantitative data to support your conclusion?

Answer #1

The two positive things about his current diet is

He is taking a high protein diet

He is taking a low carbohydrate diet .

A normal man has to consume around 2000 calories to loose one pound of et per month .loosing 1 pound per month is the safest and healthiest way to loose weight .

Why does a low carbohydrate and high protein diet help in loose weight ?

Of the the total 2700 calories 45 % that is 1200 kcal constitute the proteins .

Protein gives a satiety feeling it tells the brain that it's tired of eating and thus consume fewer overall calories

It takes lot of time to digest proteins so the body spend a good amount of calories just to digest proteins

Protein increases the metabolism of the body thus keeping you strong and active

Indulge in biological proteins like eggs, nuts for better effect .

Low carbohydrate diet

Of the total kcal only 20%is constituted of carbohydrates .that to complex carbohydrate helps to cause roughage as it add fiber to the body .by having complex carbs the satiety feeling is better and it helps in insulin sensitivity because complex carbohydrate takes time to be converted to sugar which avoid a sudden spike in the blood glucose level

So overall a low carbohydrate and high protein diet helps in loosing weight .
