John took Xenical for about 1 year. For the first 7 months, until November, he was losing weight fairly steadily. Dr. Parnell had stressed the importance of watching his caloric intake and maintaining physical activity, and John complied pretty well. When he knew there was a social event on a particular day, he ate just a piece of toast for breakfast and had an apple at his desk for lunch, so he could eat more at dinner. He was able to get some exercise at least twice a week. His weight dropped to 218 lb. Starting in November, the firm received lots of invitations to social events, and John found himself dining out four to five times each week. He also started dating more. Some weeks he was too busy to go to the gym. When he started experiencing more severe gastrointestinal side effects, Dr. Parnel advised him to stop taking the Xenical. By January John had regained 30 lb. A woman at work told John that he could easily lose that weight by going on a diet that she had tried. She was eating 900 kcal/day with very few carbohydrates and was losing lots of weight. John thought that diet might work for him, but he felt that 1,000 kcal a day would be better due to his larger size. 1. Design a 1,000 kcal/day low-carbohydrate (20% of kcal) diet for John that has at least 300 kcal from protein. 2. What do you imagine would be the barriers to staying on such a diet?
