Malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy and/or nutrients. There are 4 broad sub-forms of undernutrition: wasting, stunting, underweight, and deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. Undernutrition makes children in particular much more vulnerable to disease and death.
summary: malnutrition is one of the greatest problems among the children of developing nations. this study presents relationship between infections among children and their nutritional status and its related association with hygienic conditions as risk of infection. its a case control study where cluster randomized trail was carried out in two slums of kenya in 2018-19. the prevalence of malnutrition was found to be higher; where most of the children studied were found to be stunted, then wasted, and then underweight. 46–80% of all nutrition-related deaths are a consequence of mild to moderate malnutrition. evidence indicates that malnourished children have a clear excess risk of infectious morbidity and mortality. The results of the study in the slums demonstrate a significant association between inadequate access to safe drinking water and stunting. determinants of stunting were sex and feeding practices. Underweight is significantly associated with socio-demographic factors.
significance working as a nurse in paediatric ward, it becomes necessary for me to know the basic anthropometric measures of a child. how and when a particular disease condition is related to which life condition, data on infant feeding practices, food security of a child, immunization status of the child, all becomes necessary to foresee the treatment regimes for him/her. Children with the worst anthropometric parameters present an elevated risk of death from a variety of severe infections including sepsis, meningitis, measles and tuberculosis whereas sub-clinical infection and non fatal cases lead to growth impairment among children. the article presents malnutrition as a worldwide problem among the children of specially developing countries. Combating malnutrition in all its forms is one of the greatest global health challenges. Undernutrition in childhood causes 3.1 million child deaths annually and yes, it does impact the particularly, slum dwelling children or children living in families of low middle income groups or overcrowded communities. poverty, overcrowding, more number of dependents than the one single bread owner, education and awareness all these factor affect these sections of society or vice versa.
acute malnutrition is correlated with acute infections, while chronic malnutrition is more influenced by WASH conditions. one cannot separate infection and its risk factors as determinants of the whole malnutrition burden.
Addressing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) practices, to improve sanitary conditions in countries afflicted by high stunting rates. practicing hygienic defaecation, constructing toilets away from households. food security, immunization coverage , exclusive breast feeding, starting complementary semi-solid food should be promoted from the respective governments and stakeholders.
