The term “spiritual care” refers to offering spiritual methods of support and enhance the spiritual health of an individual, which in turn enhance the physical health.
Shelly and Miller (2006) described the spiritual care as bringing the people in touch with God through prayer, reading scriptures, and active listening. The spiritual care mainly focuses on establishing a relationship with God, and this is addressed through different methods in different religions.
It is different from my personal ideal of spirituality because that is a general idea expressing the benefit of spirituality in healthcare. Each human has spiritual needs, which are one of the essential needs in all times. Many patients are generally disturbed by spiritual distress particularly those suffering from chronic diseases and those receiving end of life care. Satisfying the spiritual needs of patients from various cultures is one of the greatest challenges for nurses. In many research articles, it was pointed out that being sensitive to the spiritual needs of patients makes it possible to provide real and complete health care.
