As a medical assistant, I agree to the fact that Math is important. Mathematics is a wonderful subject that helps us to build logic and problem solving skill. As a clinician, thinking to a patient's problem with proper logic and reasoning will help us to reach an appropriate diagnosis easily. Mathematics develops our ability of critical thinking and analyze the situation. It will help a medical professional to critically analyze every behavior and specifically observe any changes in attitude of the patient that can pin point towards a diagnosis.
Mathematics foster our ability to count and do basic operations which are needed in our day to day life. To cite an example, a medical/ paramedical staff need to count the pulse rate, respiratory rate or measure the blood pressure, calculate the dosage of a drug etc.
Medical assistants also deal with billing of patients viz. number of visits; number of procedures done; insurance claims to be deducted etc. These operations require swift skills in addition; subtraction; multiplication. Hence the role of mathematics in the life of medical assistant is commendable.
