Occupied bed:- Occupied bed is the bed which is used when patient / client is not allowed to out of bed.

Procedure for occupied bed is as follows:-

1. Should assemble all equipments and supplies,

2. Should explain to the client that what she is going to do,

3. Wash hands, and wear gloves,

4. Provide privacy to the client,

5. Remove all pillows except one,

6. Loosen the bedding on all sides and remove the spread and the blanket leaving the top sheet over the client,

7. Turn the patient away from you . If the client is ill, call for the assistance,

8. Fanfold the draw sheet to the client and push it as close to the client as possible,

9. Damp dust the rubber sheet and roll it back. Fanfold the bottom sheet to the client,

10. Dust the mattress with a dry duster. Then raise the mattress with one hand and clean the cot with a damp duster,

11. Place the clean bottom sheet over the mattress making sure that the middle fold is in middle of the bed. Half of the sheet is fanfolded and kept near to the client. Tuck the head end, make the corners at the top and bottom and tuck sides as in open bed,

12. Bring the mackintosh back into the place and tuck it tightly under the mattress. Place the clean draw sheet over the mackintosh and tuck the near end under the mattress. The distal half is folded and kept near to the client,

13. Turn the client back over the folded linen and then towards you . Go to the opposite side of the bed,

14. Remove the soiled linen and put them in the laundry bag,

15 . Turn the client back to the middle of the bed. Place a clean sheet over the client and remove the soiled top sheet.,

16. Replace the blanket and spread over the top sheet and make the bed as in an open bed,

17. Tuck the foot end giving enough freedom for movement,

18. Put the clean pillow cases and place the pillows in position and leave the client comfortable.

Unoccupied bed:- Unoccupied bed is the bed which is used when the client is able to get out of the bed , is left open with the top sheets folded down.

Procedure for making an unoccupied bed is as follows:-

1. Gather necessary linens and supplies,

2 . Wash hands, put on gloves ,

3. Then explain what you are going to do,

4. Raise adjustable bed to the highest position, lower bed rails,

5. Then remove the pillow case and put the pillow on the bed side chair,

6. Remove soiled linen and put that in linen hamper,

7. Wash and dry plastic covered mattress , if soiled,

8. Remove gloves and wash hands,

9. Place the folded bottom sheet with its centre fold on the center of the bed , spread the sheet over the bed,

10. Place draw sheet in the center of the bed,

11. Place the top sheet , and cover the top sheet with blanket,

12. Fold back the cuff at the head of the bed with the sheet and blanket,

13. Put clean pillow case on the pillow and put it in the center of the top of the bed.
