When combining the words in medical terminology we must identify the words and classify to prefix words, root words and suffix words. The vowel between root word and suffix word should be removed when combining the words in medical terms.

1. Intra - prefix, Cranio - root, al - suffix

Intracranial - O is removed

2. Sub- prefix, pulmono - root, ary - suffix

Subpulmonary - O is removed

3. Cardio - root, gram - root

Cardiogram - both are root words so the vowel is not removed

4. Osteo - root, algia - root

Osteoalgia - both are root words so the vowel is not removed

5. Gastro - root, tomy - root

Gastrotomy - both are root words so the vowel is not removed
