The patient will achieve muscle strength to 3/5 or greater and attain the correct gait and walking posture following two months of initiation therapy.

Gait means the way the person walks, abnormal gait occurs when the body systems that controls does not function gait properly.

A walking velocity of 1.1 to 1.5 m/s is considered to be normal to walk like a pedestrian.

Management to achieve normal Gait.

  • If the underlying cause(like fracture) is responsible for abnormal gait then correcting the cause will help to restore normal Gait. Physical therapy helps the patient to achieve optimum correct gait. Various physical therapies can be used according to the cause of abnormal gait like:
  1. Orthopedic physical therapy (treats musculoskeletal injuries)
  2. Neurological physical therapy (treats neurological abnormalities like alzemer's disease parkinson's disease)
  3. Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation
  4. Pediatric training
  5. Vestibular therapy (treats inner ear problems of balance)
  • For long term abnormal gait patients use leg braces, walker, crutches and canes
  • Execute passive or active assertive ROM exercises to improve venous return, prevent muscle stiffness, maintains muscle strength and stamina
  • Give appropriate medication like antispasmodic medication may reduce muscle spasms or spasticity that interferes with mobility and analgesic drugs that controls pain that impedes mobility.
