Many patients take numerous prescription medications along with over the counter (OTC) medications and do not realize the adverse effects that can occur when mixing OTCs and prescriptions medications. What are some over the counter medications that might interfere with prescription meds? Name three and how they affect each other. Make sure you include what the OTC is and the prescription it affects and how it affects it?

OTC means over the counter drugs, I.e. the drugs which can be bought directly from the pharmacy without prescription .Prescription drugs require a prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

Example--

1)Cimetidine (OTC),antihistaminic ,inhibits the metabolism of phenytoin (prescription drug), antiepileptic and thus increases its toxicity.

2)Ranitidine (OTC) decreases the hepatic blood flow of propranolol (prescription) and thus increases the toxicity.

3)Dextromethorphan (OTC) interacts with MAO inhibitors (prescription)leading to serotonin syndrome
