Drug - Ondansetron
1. Medication order - 2mg/ml IV , 4mg/ 8mg tablet orally ,4mg/8mg oral dissolving film, 4mg/8mg oral disintegrating tablets , 2mg/5ml oral solution .

# Action of this medication
Prevents nausea, vomiting by blocking serotonin peripherally, centrally, and in the small intestine
6. Indications for the use of this medication :-
Prevention of nausea, vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, radiotherapy; prevention of postoperative nausea, vomiting.

9. Life threatening adverse reactions/side effects
bronchospasm (rare)
8. Common adverse reactions/side effects
Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, EPS
musculoskeletal pain, wound problems, shivering, fever, hypoxia, urinary retention.
10. Drug interactions
Amiodarone and other class III anti arrhythmic agents can cause dose-related prolongation of the QT interval.
11. Drug-Lab-Food Interactions
Lab-increase bilirubin, AST and ALT Levels (increase could detect liver damage). Ginger may increase bleeding with anticoagulants.
12. Nursing Interventions and Considerations
.Assess: history of onset, frequency, amount and contents of vomitus.
Concerns: daily dose not exceed 8mg.

Monitor: vital signs, labs-increase in bilirubin, AST & ALT levels;
Isolation if secondary to C-diff.
For chemotherapy give antiemetic 30 to 60 minutes before therapy.

Teach: avoid alcohol, causes intensify sedative effect; teach client and family about contact precautions for C-diff. Client with liver disease (daily dose not to exceed 8 mg).
