Stage 1 mouth :-

Food broken down by teeth and amylase

Amylase

enzyme in saliva that breaks down carbohydrates into sugar

Enzyme

Biological catalyst that speeds up chemical reactions

Stage 2 oesophagus :-

Food passes through oesophagus into the stomach

Stage 3 stomach :-

where the food mixes with stomach acid and enzymes. The stomach is a muscular bag which churns the food, breaking it down into small pieces

Stage 4 small intestine :-

Food passes through small intestine and proteins fats and carbs are broken down into smaller molecules and absorbed by villi

Stage 5 large intestine :-

Remaining nutrients are passed through the large intestine where water is absorbed into the body and undigested molecules form faeces
