Answer #1

Salmon is a common resource, nobody owns it. Anybody can catch it at free of cost and sell it to earn profit. Nobody can prevent others to catch, sell or consume it at no cost. Salmon population face extinction because there is no restriction to catch it and people catch it frequently.

Goldfish is a private good. Private goods are those goods that need to be purchased, it is not available for free. Again consumption of a private good by one consumer prevents others to consume it. Goldfish are kept as pet by those people who purchase it. The pet shop owners breed goldfish to sell customers and make profits out of it. Here the goal of the pet shop owner in breeding Goldfish is to make a profit. He can't breed the Goldfish without a profit incentive. Goldfish population do not face extinction because only limited people can possess it who pays for it and the pet shop owner can breed it only when he has the profit incentive to do so.

“[We now consider] the question whether it is better to be loved rather than feared, or feared rather than loved. It might perhaps be answered that we should wish to be both; but since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved.
