1) Cultural competence and diversity are often considered to have the same meaning in healthcare facilities. What is the difference between these two terms and their applicability in terms of healthcare professionals in various healthcare settings?

2) Explain the unique circumstances under which the ancestors of most Black/African American people arrived in the Americas. Why is it important for health service professionals to understand this history?

3) Is Hispanic a racial or ethnic category? Explain. How might this impact the status of the African/Black group, for example, in terms of whether it is the largest or second largest minority group?

4) List the racial categories based on the OMB classification in the United States. Explain the geographic origins of the people designated for each of the categories. Why is it important for health professionals to understand cultural differences among and between groups?

5) A physical therapy office in “Little Haiti” in Miami, Florida is closed due to lack of funds. All patients’ appointments are routed to a nearby hospital’s physical therapy department in which the predominant population served is Cuban. List and describe a minimum some steps you believe the department has to take to meet the needs of the patients from a culturally competent prospective.

1. Cultural competence is the ability of a health care provider to connect to patients with different cultural backgrounds. when patients are assured that the health care personal is well versed with their cultures, believes language etc. , it becomes easier to built a connect between the patient and the health care personal. Diversity in healthcare terms would focus on accepting the patients race, ethnicity, etc. Diversity and cultural competence are terms that go hand in hand. However diversity can be an imporatant function of competence.

2.The circumstance that got the ancestors of african americans to america was due to slave trade from Africa. Health care personals need to be aware of this history as many of these african american people who are stranded and brought forcefully suffer from mental stress and health problems. Negativity and racist behavior towards these people get them vulnerable. therefore in order to provide any type of treatment the history and background of the patient needs to be noted.

3. The Federal policy defines “Hispanic” as an ethnicity and not a race. If one of the groups fall into minority geographically then it becomes more of a challenge to understand and accept the culture of the people.

4. The racial categories based on the OMB classification in the United States are American Indians, Asian, African American, native hawaiian and whites.

American Indian: North, Central, or South America, and who maintains tribal affiliations or community attachment.

Asian: Southeast Asia, Far East, ( Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam)

Black or African American: Any black racial groups of Africa.

Native Hawaiian :Samoa, Hawaii, Guam.

White: Europe, the Middle East, North Africa.  

The ethnicity and lifestyle of each of these people placed in the groups is diverse. therefore it becomes important for health professionals to understand cultural differences among and between groups

5.As mentioned each group of people have differences in their lifestyle patterns and culture, habits etc. therefore a minimum some steps that  the department has to take to meet the needs of the patients from a culturally competent prospective are looking after the food habits for instance grains are a staple food. Religion sentiments of people as well as taboos like voodoo etc are also believed by the local people. Other factors like Gender Biased differences should also be considered.
