During Middle Ages Barber’s pole was a sign used by the barbers to signify the shop or place where they perform their craft. The barber’s pole has a helix of red and white stripes, some countries have blue colour also. Till 19th century barbers were generally referred to as barber-surgeons as they performed variety of tasks.

The tasks performed by them are tooth extraction, creating ritual scars or tattoos, cutting out gallstones, giving enemas, correcting fractures and treating wounds.

The barber pole is linked to bloodletting. Red colour represents blood and white colour represents bandages. Barbering services was performed in 5000 BC by Egyptians. They used oyster shells as instruments for doing the procedures or surgeries.
