 In the following situations, describe the most appropriate actions or responses to be taken by the Personal Support Worker and explain why this is correct. Your answer should reflect knowledge of effective communication skills, the extent and limitations of your role, and an understanding of the client's total needs. (4 marks each)

 1 You are assigned to help Mrs. Jones with her laundry and vacuuming. When you try to do Mrs. Jones' laundry, she tells you you've used too much soap, even though you have used the correct amount according to the package. She also insists you use cold water, even though the clothes can be washed in warm and her detergent is not recommended for use in cold water. When you bring the clothes up from the dryer, she complains that they are not really clean."

In this situation, you be calm and compassionate and provide a stable center. Inform the incidents to managers and get help when the situation across the line. Don't be impatience and show empathy and respond to them with the act of kindness. Talk with the client in a low tone and talk with family members and get positive communication with the patient, it changes their negative behavior. never argue with the patient. protect yourself from physical and verbal abuse and commit yourself to self-care.
Reasons:
Personal support workers are important workers in housekeeping and hygiene assistance, etc. their communication is important and it should be effective interaction for their responsibility and obligations. effective listening skills make quality service and effective understanding. Patients seek assistants they have much physical and mental disability and they have medication side effects that cause frustrated with immobility and cognitive ability. it causes frequent outbursts and makes angry with others.

1) 

Actions/Response: (2 marks)

 

I would remain calm and apologize to Mrs. Jones in this situation; I would then proceed to further explain the reason as to why I’m using this amount of soap and not using cold water to do her laundry is because the labelling on the bottle does not recommend cold water and I’m only trying to use the detergent in the right way so that her clothes does not get affected in any possible way. All in all I wouldn’t argue with the client, I would listen effectively and emphasize with her, while trying to protect myself from physical and verbal abuse.

  After explaining the reason for my actions to her I would be sure to go ahead and report this to my supervisor in order to decide the course of action from here and move forward accordingly.

As a PSW effective communication is a very important part of my job as well as effective listening & understanding skills and providing quality service to clients. My job is also to protect myself as well so I would avoid any arguments with the client and assure her that I’ve heard her point of view.

Actions/Response: (2 marks)

 

 As a PSW it is my duty/responsibility is to meet the basic requirements of the client. In this situation one of the requirements of the client includes dusting which is a task that requires a certain amount of time given the quantity of items that need to be dusted. The best thing to do in this situation would be to prioritize in order to manage my time for most important to least important. I would also inform the client of the way in which I’ve prioritized my tasks and ensure her that I will try my utmost best to try to complete all of the tasks but given the amount of time which is scheduled dusting of every single one of her teacups, figurines and glass lamps will be done if time permits me to do so. This will also be reported to my supervisor so that they are aware of the work load that is required by the client.

In order to make the client feel respected and let her know that I’m taking into consideration all of her requirements and to avoid conflict I communicate with her so that she knows that time is of the essence but I will be trying my very best.

3)

I’m assigned as Mrs. Goretz PSW which means that I’m responsible for taking care of her and to help her meet her physical, psychological and mental well-being. Therefore in this situation since I can choose whether or not to clean the glass I would definitely do so if it is safe, in order to fulfill my clients’ needs by allowing her to engage in her favorite activity.

My reasons for doing this is that I feel that I would be assuring that my clients mental and psychological needs will be met rather than neglecting her happiness due to the agency’s policy.

4) 

Actions/Response: (2 marks)

Personal care and diet are both equally important. In this situation I would have to plan out my day and manage my time wisely in order for me to be able to have time left to make the corn bread for Mrs. Rice. I would first start with her personal care/ nursing care so once these activities are done my remaining time can be allocated into food preparation.

 

Reasons: (2 marks)

 

My reason for doing personal hygiene first is that food takes a longer time to make. I’d perform personal hygiene first, and then dedicate the rest of the time to preparing the food. I know that my client is comfortable while she awaits me to be done cooking and also while the food on the fire I can multi task and do other chores around the house. The desires / needs/ preferences of the client is the first thing that has to be met.

 

5) 

Actions/Response: (2 marks)

 

I would try educate Mrs. Prunt on the importance of not only eating but eating healthy foods. Furthermore I’d try to encourage her to talk about what foods she likes as well as what she  dislikes in the effort that the foods may be prepared as per her choice in the required quantity and to also avoid food wastage. Now that I know what she enjoys eating I can now develop a meal plan which includes what she likes while also ensuring that it’s also nutritious.

To make my client feel more comfortable as well as educate her so that she may know better and take her health into consideration. Also to let her know that I’m here to listen as well as see about her well-being which involves her having her daily meals and seeing about her health.
