Case 44: Cultural Competence at Marion County Health Center from Health Services Management: A Case Approach (11th ed) pp 317-323.
For this assignment, you will assume the role of Patricia Cole, the new administrator at MCHC. Emily Parsons, the director of all Marion County Health Center (MCHC) screening programs has just completed her investigation into concerns raised by you regarding breast cancer screening rate statistics at MCHC. Emily's findings are available to you in the case study.
With Emily's findings in hand, you have decided to utilize a cultural assessment tool you previously read about in the report, "Hospitals, Language, and Culture: A Snapshot of the Nation." The report was based on a cross-sectional study to determine how 60 hospitals across the nation were providing health care to culturally and linguistically diverse patients. The report presents findings on cultural competence within the framework of six domains: Leadership, Quality Improvement and Data Use, Workforce, Provision of Care and Patient Safety, Language Services, and Community Engagement. You have decided to reread the report and assess MCHC's cultural competency practices within the framework of the six domains using a Likert scale.
Using the cultural assessment tool provided below, evaluate Emily's findings for MCHC by placing an "x" in the appropriate column for each item listed under the six domains. Once you have completed this portion of the assessment, please respond to the following questions:
1. In 300 words or less, describe the cultural
competency problems MCHC faces.
2. Identify four stakeholders and briefly state their interest in
the outcome of the assessment.
3. List four cultural barriers that are readily identifiable from
the situation at MCHC.
4. What strategies would you recommend to overcome the four
cultural barriers you have previously identified at MCHC? Recommend
two strategies for each cultural barrier.
Since this is an assessment that you will likely share with other stakeholders at some point, you will want to incorporate a minimum of three outside professional sources to strengthen your overall assessment.
