An engineer claims to have developed a booster pump to pump to a reservoir located on the roof, water from the rain and deposited in an underground reservoir. The equipment operates coupled to a power cycle, where a 700 W radiation from the sun maintains a metal plate heated to 50 ° C and provides 100 W for pump operation. The thermal exchange to cool the water of the cycle is done with the stored water of the rain, which is at 20º C. From the considerations of the text, determine the efficiency of the system and classify as possible or impossible justifying its response.

Answer #1

Overall efficiency of the system = Power output by the pump/Input power from sunlight

= 100/700 = 14 % approximately.

Without knowing head (height to which water is pumped) and area of heat exchanger, it is impossible to conclude whether this system will work or not.
