The FDA regulates that fish that is consumed is allowed to contain 1.0 mg/kg of mercury. In Florida, bass fish were collected in 53 different lakes to measure the amount of mercury in the fish. DO the data provide enough evidence to show that the fish in Florida lakes has more mercury than the allowable amount? state the random variable, population parameter, and hypotheses.

Answer #1

We have given population mean \mu = 1.0 , sample size n = 53

Here the random variable X is contain of mercury in the fish.

Here we have given population mean \mu = 1.0

Hence Population parameter is   \mu = 1.0

In this problem we have asked to find weather data provide enough evidence to show that the fish in Florida lakes has more mercury than the allowable amount. That is  \mu > 1.0

Hence the hypothesis will be -

H0 : \mu = 1.0 vs H1:  \mu > 1.0

Hope this will help you. Thank you :)
