Studs are used on the top of the steel girder flange in order to provide the composite action between the concrete slab and steel girders. Studs also called as shear connector or shear studs helps in forming a shear connection between the concrete slab and steel girders, which prevents the slip.
As concrete slab and girders experience the natural shear flow, due to composite action, if there are no studs installed between them the concrete slab resting over steel girder will bend as shown in figure below,
Thus to prevent the bending of the slab resting over the steel girder there needs the shear connectors between them called as studs.
