Rick and Sarah are sliding a box of mass 10.0kg across a floor. The motion of the box is strictly horizontal, so we can ignore vertical forces – more on that later. Rick pushes with a force of 30.0N. Sarah pulls in the same direction with a force of 25.0N. Friction between the box and the floor is 50.0N. The speed of the box at one time was 1.50m/s.

a) What is the speed of the box 2.00sec after that? Hint: Use the following steps. Find the net force. Find the acceleration using Newton’s second law. Use the acceleration in a kinematic equation to find the final velocity.

b) What would the answer to part a) have been if the friction were 55.0N?

c) What would the answer to part a) have been if the friction were 60.0N?

d) Draw a free body diagram for the box. Ignore the vertical forces.
