If two successive frequencies of standing waves on a string are 225 Hz, and 2.70E2 Hz, what is the fundamental frequency of this string?
If two successive frequencies are given, then the fundamental frequency is simply the difference between them.
Fundamental frequency = 270 - 225
= 45 Hz (ans)

5. A person hums into the top of a well and hears that standing waves are established at frequencies of 42, 70, and 98 Hz. She happens to have a tuning fork with her. The 42 Hz frequency sound is not the fundamental (n 1) frequency. How deep is the well? Va 343 m/s. Hint: Overtones are the n > 1 multiples of the fundamental frequency. A string fixed at both ends has successive resonances with wavelengths of 0.55 m for the nth harmonic and 0.53 m for the (n + 1)th harmonic. (a) What are the following values? nth harmonic (n + 1)th harmonic (b) What is the length of the string? m Use the fact that the resonance frequencies are multiples of the fundamental frequency and are expressible in terms of the speed of the waves and their wavelengths to find the harmonic numbers....
