Answer:

The job characteristic theory is given by Hackman and Oldham and this is used widely for the job design by the job designers. The key purpose of this theory is to review the job characteristics that are impacting the job outcome and job satisfaction and review whether the job is designed to deliver required outcome from the job. The key job characteristics are skill variety, task significance, task variety, autonomy and feedback.

The present system of job design may be contributing to employee dissatisfaction because of the issue that the job is not having the required characteristics such as skill variety, task significance, task variety, autonomy and feedback. The designed job is lacking in any of the above job characteristics and it is resulting in negativity and dissatisfaction in the employee. If a job is meeting all the five above job characteristics, then the job will result in required outcome and required job satisfaction

We can explore below some ways that could help employee feel more satisfied with their work by redesigning their jobs as

  • We need to ensure that the job design is carried out as per the job characteristic theory and meets all key characteristics in it.
  • We need to meet the job design with respect to the market trend and we need to have make job designs common to the market.
  • The job design needs to be carried out so that it meets both the business requirements and employee requirement so that it will deliver desired outcome.
