THE INDUSTRIAL ERA AND THE PUNITIVE ERA-
Industrial Era- 1760-1830 was the era of advances in production and manufacturing. Initiated in Britain and gradually diffused in Europe, United States of America and rest of the world. Favourable climate and availability of abundant natural resources like coal were the root reasons behind pioneering of Industrial era in Britain.
Manufacturing was treated as nearly a domestic matter with small hand tools before the industrial era. This shifted to well thought, modern, advanced, scientifically proven machines, equipment, and factories for larger and better manufacturing. Cotton gins and steam engines were crucial in this context. Better employment/ labour opportunities, more income and urbanisation were the key attributes of industrial revolution.
Punitive era- is with the core thought process that punishment is the best thing ever. Long term sentences were suppose to be the ways to lighten the weight of societal debts. Prisons meant treatment and punishment. Isolated places were chosen for prison constructions. There was a remarkable increase in escape attempts and riots. Thus, punitive era had a negativity with it.
