Answer #1

For a particle of mass m on the surface of a planet of radius R and mass M the weight of the object must be equal to the force between the planet and the object i.e.,

Mm = G R2 mg

GM or, g R2

G is the universal gravitational constant and g is the acceleration due to gravity at that planet.

A) Using the formula above,

Acceleration due to gravity in Venus is

6.67 x 10- x 4.88 x 1024 m/s2 g (6.06 x 10)2 X

8.86 m/s

B) Acceleration due to gravity at Uranus is

6.67 x 10- x 8.68 x 1025 m/s2 g (2.33 x 107)

10.66 m/s

    1 (10 pts). In 1601 the German astronomer Johannes Kepler became director of the Prague Observatory. Kepler had been helping Tycho Brache in collecting 13 years of observations on relative motion of the planet Mars. By 1609, Kepler had formulated his first two laws of planetary motion: i. Each planet moves on an ellipse with the sun at one focus. ii. For each planet, the line from the sun to the planet sweeps out equal areas is equal times. Kepler's...
