The cathode and anode undergoes reduction and oxidation reaction respectively, and the cell reaction of the electrolysis of the water is given in the following equation,

Cathode ​​​reduction 2H+ + 2e- \rightarrow H2

Anode oxidation 2H2O \rightarrow O2 + 2H+ + 4e-

Overall reaction 2H2O \rightarrow O2 + 2H2.
