If so, use the structural, that is functional and symbolic interaction approaches to explain why young men might be drawn to gangs. What are the results of labeling these young people as deviant? Is it negative or positive? What could be done to keep young people from joining gangs?

Gang is a negative connotation of any group that comes together on a common program and this would mean that it’s deviant. Structural Functionalism suggests that the society is a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. This would mean a gang would always strive hard to harm others to benefit them which means it wouldn’t promote solidarity and stability but only bring tension. Symbolic Interactionism suggests that people would form their opinions and lifestyles by interacting with others through symbols and languages. Thus, it’s true that young people who come across the gangs would learn the gang behaviors because they would be driven by risk-taking and adventurous behaviors, thus would wish to engage in them for fun. But, once they join a gang, they wouldn’t be able to get back to a normal life. They would learn all the behaviors from the team members without any formal training. So, gang behaviors is always a deviant behavior.
