Oxidation of benzil to benzoin can be achieved directly by using HNO3 as the oxidant. The oxidation of state of nitrogen in HNO3 is +5.

Benzoin has carbon with the -OH group in the oxidation state -1.

after oxidation benzoin carbon oxidation state changes to +2 and the nitrogen oxidation state in NO2 formed from HNO3 is +4.

Cu+ acts as a reducing agent for Ag+ species. Cu+ goes to Cu2+ while Ag+ goes to Ag by reduction.
