Agave is a plant that grows in Mexico and the southwestern U.S.
Researchers at Penn State University conducted a study to see if a
syrup made from the Agave nectar was effective at relieving cough
in children. In this study the researchers recruited 80 children
who went to an outpatient pediatric practice with a cough. The
researchers randomly assigned the children to one of two groups (40
to each). One group received a grape flavored agave nectar and the
other group received a placebo in the form of grape flavored water,
which tasted identical.
The parents of the children were then asked to complete a survey on
how frequently the child coughed that night. The parents were aware
of whether the child received the agave or the placebo, but were
instructed not to provide any information about this to their
children. The researchers found that there was no statistically
significant difference between the agave and placebo groups.
Question 29:
Identify the:
(1) experimental design,
(2) subjects,
(3) explanatory variable, and
(4) response variable.
Question 30- This is a single blind study. Describe how to modify to be double blinded.
Question 31: One of the researchers was concerned that younger
children might respond differently to the cough syrup, so they
propose an alternative design, wherein the children are split
according to age. Since the 80 children in the study were from ages
4 to 12, they decided to make 2 groups, ages 4-8 and 8-12.It was
found that 36 children were in the 4-8 age group, and the rest (44
children) were in the 8-12 age group. For age group 4-8,18 children
were randomly assigned to agave nectar and 18 to the grape flavored
water. Similar random assignment was made for age group 8-12.
Which of the following describes the design of this experiment?
Select one:
a. Stratified random design.
b. Randomized block design.
c. Simple random design.
d. Cluster design.
29)
1)experimental design :single blinded experimental design
2)subjects: 80 children who went to an outpatient pediatric practice with a cough
3) explanatory variable :type of treatment: agave nectar or placebo
4) response variable: number of times child coughed that night
30)
we should hide the information whether the child received the agave or the placebo to make it double blind
31)
b. Randomized block design.

In a randomized comparative experiment on the effect of dietary calcium on blood pressure, researchers divided 58 healthy white males at random into two groups. One group received calcium; the other, a placebo. At the beginning of the study, the researchers measured many variables on the subjects. The paper reporting the study gives x⎯⎯⎯=x¯=113.4 and s = 9.4 for the seated systolic blood pressure of the 29 members of the placebo group. Give a 95% confidence interval for the mean...
Solve the problem. A drug company developed a honey-based liquid medicine designed to calm a child's cough at night. To test the drug, 105 children who were ill with an upper respiratory tract infection were randomly selected to participate in a clinical trial. The children were randomly divided into three groups - one group was given a dosage of the honey drug, the second was given a dosage of liquid DM (an over-the-counter cough medicine), and the third (control group)...

tiONS and bata Researchers are studying the relationship between honesty, age, and self-control conducted an experiment on 160 ages of 5 and 15. The researchers asked each child to toss a fair coin in private and to record the outcome (heads or tails) on a paper sheet, and said they would only reward children who report heads. Half the students were explicitly told not to cheat and the others were not given any explicit instruction s. Differences were observed in...

Identify this study design: A study examined the effect of obesity and dietary/exercise habits on pre-diabetes among children aged 12-18. Pre-diabetic children were selected and matched with a group of children of the same age who were not diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Researchers measured BMI, dietary intake, and exercise and assessed for differences between the two groups. ecologic study cross-sectional study case-control study cohort study which one?
Researchers wanted to determine if the psychological profile of healthy children was different than for children suffering from recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) or recurring headaches. A total of 210 children and adolescents were studied and their psychological profiles were graded according to a child behavior checklist. Children were stratified in two age groups: 4 to 11 years and 12 to 18 years. The results of the study are summarized in the accompanying table. Complete parts (a) through (f) below. B...

Group 1 received a placebo, Group 2 received a low dose of the miracle drug “New-and-Improved Anti-M”, and Group 3 received a moderate dose of “New-and-Improved Anti-M.” Rates of recovery were recorded for each group in days, Compute the appropriate test to determine if the drug is effective.
