Reactions of MnIII(salpn) complexes with hydrogen peroxide

• Dissolve 0.025 mmoles of each of the Mn(III) complexes [11 mg MnIII(salpn)(AcAc) and 13 mg MnIII(salpn)(H2O)2(CF3SO3)] in 10 mL acetonitrile in separate test tubes.

• Add 1-2 drops (from a pasteur pipette) of 30% hydrogen peroxide to each tube. Record your observations carefully.

• To each tube, add 1-2 drops of triethylamine (please add this reagent in a fume hood), and carefully record your observations.

Synthesis of [MnIV(salpn)(µ-O)]2

• Slurry 5 mmoles (2.15 g) of MnIII(salpn)(AcAc) in 25 mL acetonitrile. (Not all of the solid will dissolve)

• With stirring, add about 1.5 equivalents of hydrogen peroxide (4.0 mL of 30% aqueous H2O2) dropwise.

• Cool in an ice water bath for at least 20 min. and suction filter. Determine the yield of the dry solid.
