The decomposition of nitrosyl chloride represents a second order process.

2 nitrosyl chloride ? dichlorine + 2 nitrogen monoxide

Answer the following questions about the decomposition of nitrosyl chloride. Report all answers to three significant figures.

1. The initial concentration of nitrosyl chloride is 3.244×10-3 M, however after 3.39 h the concentration decreases to 2.011×10-3 M. Calculate the rate constant (in /M hr) for this process.

Tries 0/3

2. If the initial concentration of nitrosyl chloride is 3.244×10-3 M, calculate the concentration (in M) of nitrosyl chloride after 1.66 hrs.

Answer #1

2NOCl(g) --------------> Cl2(g) + 2NO(g)

second order

Kt   = 1/[A] - 1/[A0]

t = 3.39hr

[A0]   = 3.244*10^-3M

[A]     = 2.011*10^-3M

K*3.39 = 1/2.011*10^-3 - 1/3.244*10^-3

K*3.39   = 497.265- 308.261

K*3.39   = 189.004

K            = 189.004/3.39   = 55.753M^-1/hr

2.

Kt   = 1/[A] - 1/[A0]

t = 1.66hr

[A0]   = 3.244*10^-3M

[A]     =

55.753*1.66 = 1/[A] - 1/3.244*10^-3

55.753*1.66 = 1/[A]- 308.261

92.55+308.261   = 1/[A]

[A]      = 1/400.811   = 0.0025M >>>>answer
