Actin filaments are firmly attached to the Z-disc so that they can transmit forces from the thick filament to the next sarcomere. A sarcomere is defined by two successive Z-lines, thus actin filaments from two successive sarcomeres are attached to one Z-line. During muscle contraction, there is a cross-bridge formation between thin filaments (actin) and thick filaments (myosin) which generates the force required for contraction. The Z-lines come closer to the M-line during contraction so that actin filament overlaps the myosin filament. When the tips of actin filament are just beginning to overlap one another, then at this length, the muscle is capable of generating it's greatest force of contraction.
